TEACHING YOUR CHILDREN TO LOVE

YOLANDA 2nd EDIT-12

“Children Learn What They Live”
If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn. If children live with hostility, they learn to fight. If children live with fear, they learn to be apprehensive. If children live with pity, they learn to feel sorry for themselves. If children live with ridicule, they learn to feel shy. If children live with jealousy, they learn to feel envy. If children live with shame, they learn to feel guilty. If children live with encouragement, they learn confidence. If children live with tolerance, they learn patience. If children live with praise, they learn appreciation. If children live with acceptance, they learn to love. If children live with approval, they learn to like themselves. If children live with recognition, they learn it is good to have a goal. If children live with sharing, they learn generosity. If children live with honesty, they learn truthfulness. If children live with fairness, they learn justice. If children live with kindness and consideration, they learn respect. If children live with security, they learn to have faith in themselves and in those about them. If children live with friendliness, they learn the world is a nice place in which to live.

FOUR THINGS TO DO WITH YOUR CHILDREN THAT WILL TEACH THEM ABOUT LOVE.

1. Model how they should treat others.

2. Have them give back by taking them to volunteer at a early age.

3. Let them know how you feel about them.

4. Teach them how to handle injustice in a peaceful way.

To My Son

Oh how the years go by,
Oh how time can certainly fly.
From once just a thought in far away dreams,
now into my arms and in my eyes gleam
the presence of you.
Your laughter and smiles
which go on for miles,
warms my heart and soul.
You’re growing up so fast,
as I wish each moment with you to last forever.
My little boy will someday be a man
and right by your side I will forever stand.
I will pick up the pieces when you fall,
I will hold your hand and help you stand tall.
And when the day comes when you are on your own,
never feel that you are alone.
No matter how near or far apart
I am always right there in your heart.
Always remember whatever you go through
that no matter what, I will always love you.

Father’s are Sons Too – Letters To Our Sons – HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!

Father’s Day is a celebration honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. Many countries celebrate it on the third Sunday of June, though it is also celebrated widely on other days.

Image

As we celebrate Father’s Day I want to salute and honor all of the fathers that have stayed the course even when it was hard.  Your children need you more than you know.  Your relationship with your sons and daughters will determine their destiny.

Ephesians 6:2-3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER (which is the first commandment with a promise), SO THAT IT MAY BE WELL WITH YOU, AND THAT YOU MAY LIVE LONG ON THE EARTH.

Image

What Is A Dad?

A dad is someone who
wants to catch you before you fall
but instead picks you up,
brushes you off,
and lets you try again.

A dad is someone who
wants to keep you from making mistakes
but instead lets you find your own way,
even though his heart breaks in silence
when you get hurt.

A dad is someone who
holds you when you cry,
scolds you when you break the rules,
shines with pride when you succeed,
and has faith in you even when you fail…

A good father is the one who loves his wife.

Being a great father is like shaving.
No matter how good you shaved today,
you have to do it again tomorrow.

GREAT LESSONS YOU CAN LEARN FROM YOUR MOTHER THAT WILL MAKE YOU A MVP AND GREAT FATHER

Image

LETTERS TO OUR SONS

KEVIN DURANT VIDEO THANKING HIS MOM – CLICK LICK TO WATCH

All I could think about during Kevin Durant acceptance speech for MVP was how he demonstrated what it looks like to be a great MVP because of the help of others. He was so emotional during that speech, as was his mother, and it was an absolutely fitting way for Durant to receive the biggest honor of his basketball career. He spoke about the sacrifices his mom made to ensure he and his brothers had enough to eat every night, how she worked hard to keep them safe and on the right track toward success.  These are the actions that create strong secure and confident men.  Even in the hard times she encouraged and motivated them.  In her lack she wanted the best for her sons.

Image

The speech will be forever remembered because he lifted up others and honored the sacrifice that his mother made. Because of the many sacrifices of others he has become the Man that he is.   He will continue to grow not just as a basketball player but as a man. I was also impressed with one of the first things Durant said in the speech. “Basketball is just a platform for me to send the right message as a role model”. Mothers are a big part of all of our lives, and it’s important to make sure they know that. A mother role will determine how well their sons do as husbands, fathers, leaders and friends. Letter to Our Sons

ImageLETTERS TO OUR SONS THE BOOK

In honor of Father’s Day we salute all of the Fathers that are standing strong in their role.

The difference between a boy and a man is not how they made the mistake but how they rebound from it.

What truly defines a father is not what he takes in but what he gives out.

Letters To Our Sons – My Two Sons

Mrs. Willodes Conley Thompson

From the Book “Letters To Our Sons”

Dear Kenneth,

The day you were born I knew there was something special about you. Now at 51 years old, to see all that you have accomplished has made me very proud of you: finishing high school and going on to get an established job and retiring after 30 years of labor with the State of Tennessee. This shows that you can accomplish things in life without having degrees, but being diligent in whatever you put your mind to. Your great sense of humor is the joy of our family. Continue to put God first in your life and all that He has for you will come. “Seek the kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” ~Matthew 12:33 (NLT)

Love you,

Mama (Willodes Conley Thompson)

Image

Dear Robert Parnel Conley (1964-1976),

My baby boy, the thought of losing you was my worse nightmare. I didn’t know what to do, where to go, or what to think. How could this have happened to you? You were so young and vibrant, interested in everything, and you had all the life around you and in you. I couldn’t help to think of all the love and nurturing that had gone into your young life – caring for you, raising you, nursing you when you were sick and taking you to the doctors when you needed that, teaching you all the things you needed to know to keep you safe in this crazy world and most of all, how to be a great man. It was like a bolt of lightning ripping through my heart when I received the message that my son was dead. It felt like I had been stabbed in the heart with a razor-sharp knife. How could it be that you would die before me? Why you? The pain was unbelievable and unendurable, but endure we did, badly, like zombies, wondering when the pain would subside, how we’d go on living our lives, how would we, how could we, ever be happy again. Your twelve years on this earth were short, but not incomplete. God needed you most.

As I write this letter, I can remember how you would crawl up in my bed at night to sleep with me. I would pick you up and put you back into your own bed and when I’d wake up the next morning, there you would be. You were always such a great helper to our neighbors. I miss the meekness of your character and your soft-spoken voice.

 Love you,

Mama (Willodes Conley Thompson)

You’re A Gift

Mom, there are no words
that can possibly express
how much you mean to me
and how much trust I feel for you.
you’ve given up so much for me,
more than I deserve.
no matter how bad it gets
I can always count on your smile.
when you laugh,
your eyes light up
much like the stars
in the night sky.
you’re my shoulder to cry on,
my leg to lean on,
that rope that holds me together
so I don’t break.
I hope you know I love you,
with every bit of my heart.
you’re not only a mother to me,
you’re a friend, a companion but most importantly.. you’re a gift

Letters to Our Sons – A Mother’s Journey

Image

YOLANDA CONLEY SHIELDS – AUTHOR SPEAKER COACH

A Mother’s Journey

“A mother’s love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity; it dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path.”~Agatha Christie

Being a parent is a gift from God and should be a life well spent, not a burden. Can you remember a time when your parents told you how special you were? Didn’t it make you feel good? Well, it’s the same for your sons.   When they think of their mother, you want it to be good thoughts and memories. I’m not saying everything has to be perfect, but there should be good memories that appear before the hard times. My mother disciplined us all, but I still have great memories growing up in my home as a child and love when I am able to go back. (Taken from Book Letters to Our Sons)

Take time out to write your son a letter this mother’s day to let them know how much you care and remind them that God has a great purpose for them.  In the next couple of weeks I will be featuring more mothers and their sons so stay connected with us on FACEBOOK AND TWITTER.  IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE FEATURED PLEASE EMAIL Letterstooursonsbook@gmail.com

I was sitting and thinking about Mother’s day that is coming up in a couple of weeks and wanted to send a big thank you out to all the mother’s that shared their story or letter in the book LETTERS TO OUR SONS.   See a few of them in the pictures below. Mother’s from all around the world shared their stories or letters.

Letters to Our Sons – Honored that the Lord trusted me enough to raise you.

Image

FEATURED MOTHER – TARA HOLT

Dear Jordan,

The moment I found out I was carrying you in my stomach; I fell in love with you.

You have truly been my greatest blessing in life. I was so honored to know that the Lord trusted me enough to raise you.

I recall every phase of your growth and the different phases of our relationship up to this point.

As a baby you were so mild tempered. Everyone said you were an older wise man trapped in a baby’s body. Even as a toddler, you were a calm child. It was not until you reached 2nd grade that I began to notice your rambunctious side. You loved to laugh and laugh hard. At that age you would get so tickled at the smallest things and laugh yourself to the floor. And now that I think about it, you still do that today. I love that you love to laugh.

Image

For as long as I can remember you have always been caring person. You were very attentive and protective of me even as a young boy. The protective nature God placed in you has always been evident.

As you hit your preteen and teenage years I began to see you develop into a young man. I could see you then and now trying to establish your individuality and independence. It is bittersweet. You have moved from solely depending on me to only needing my guidance to lead you in the right direction.

You have a love for people and a greater love for God. At 16, you have many challenges and influences facing you daily. I thank God that you maneuver through those with guidance from the Lord. I love to watch you pray and read your bible every day. It blesses me to know that while combating the pressures and influences of this world, you know where you help comes from. Jordan you are an awesome young man and I am proud to call you my son.

Image

I pray for you daily and I know that everything that God has promised you, you will have. He’s created a huge platform for you to bring His people home. He’s given you talent and skills in athletics and academics all for the building of His kingdom. Continue to walk in your purpose and trust Him and He will bless you abundantly.

I love you to life Jordan and I look forward to seeing all that God has planned for your life.
